What you'll be reading
Welcome to our most global issue yet! We begin our journey in Milan, at the
World's Fair, where structural specialists Maffeis have been assisting countries
mount their beautiful tentlike pavilions.
As engineers, we relish a challenge, and this issue features not one but three
of them: a soil improvement project in Dammam with special site conditions, a
stadium lighting arch that required dismantling, and a feasibility study for a new
tunnel in the Andes mountains.
Design is evolving, and several members of the Dar Group are leading the
way. We look at two museum projects, the largest museum for natural
history in China and the largest netzero energyuse museum in the U.S. Then,
"Happy, Healthy Workplaces" examines our work in the new field of corporate
health and wellness design. Finally, we turn our sights inwards, to Dar Cairo's
sustainable new headquarters.
In current projects, we look at a landscaping project in the arid spaces of Saudi
Arabia that has earned high marks for water conservation, and at how Currie
& Brown has been collaborating on one of the world's largestever transport
infrastructure programs in Qatar. We also spotlight IPA Advisory Limited (IPA),
an independent advisory practice providing services in over 80 countries and a
proud member of the Dar Group since 2005.
As recent achievements, we include the formation of the London Sustainability
Group, the securing of PMC 18001:2007 certification by Dar's PMC department
and the two design awards earned by Perkins+Will.
As these stories attest, excellence truly is global. We look forward to you reading
all about it.
