KICK-OFF TIME APPROACHES
Dar AlHandasah was tasked with renovating,
constructing, completing, and maintaining the Khalifa
Stadium and Museum at the Aspire Zone. The multi
purpose sports facility will raise its capacity from
39,828 to 45,000 spectators in time for 2022 FIFA
World Cup Qatar.
Among other things, Dar's expansion will make room
for bigger facilities, a single roof to cover all seats
per FIFA regulations, and sports lighting. But to
successfully do the job, the Dar team began by
dismantling or demolishing some existing structures.
READY, SET, DISMANTLE
Dismantling the lighting arch was a special challenge,
involving four tasks:
1.
Installing nine temporary towers
·
Towers up to 48 m in height with a 130ton
mobile crane
·
Towers above 48 m in height with a 160ton
crawler crane
2.
Detensioning the prestressing cables
3.
Dismantling the seven segments of the lighting
arch using a 400ton crawler crane with super lift
4.
Dismantling the temporary towers.
LIGHTS OUT
When Dar's team was entrusted with expanding the Khalifa
Stadium and Museum, a major challenge was dismantling the
existing lighting arch.
