Rollout and recognition
The new HSEMS was swiftly adopted within Dar, and soon became part of our
firm's process for reporting and recording information on site. Delivery teams
at Dar phased out their previously known system in favor of the new system.
For now, the system is accessible via an insider PMC folder, but plans are
underway to roll out training courses for all health, safety and environment
managers across the network.

The new HSEMS also proved successful with a number of Dar's clients. It was
externally audited and garnered positive comments. Contractors expressed
admiration for the simplicity and ease of the tools for managing health,
safety and environment on site. The system is now a formal reporting tool
on more than 17 major projects, and that number is growing.
A recruitment drive in 2013 for more health, safety and environment
professionals in Dar helped spread the new HSEMS to Dar's projects
throughout the Gulf and MENA regions. Quickly, the health, safety and
environment statistics on Dar's projects became measurable, showing
accident trends were falling, audit/inspection scores were improving,
and the morale of the workforce was more positive. Perhaps, most
importantly, the PMC team now had a tool to drive clients' expectations.
A continuing need for personal responsibility
To fully achieve the objectives of HSEMS, the PMC team will conduct
regular site audits and inspections on all PMC projects at least once a month.
Safety training, mentoring and coaching will be given to the project teams
who need help fulfilling safety obligations and improving knowledge.
However, even a perfect HSEMS cannot do the job alone. No management
system, no matter how excellent, is a substitute for responsible thinking.
Ultimately, the success of HSEMS will depend on Dar's people. And the
vision throughout remains the same: safety first.
