A well researched choice of materials and construction methods
provides the occupants of every building with cleaner indoor
air quality. When it came to adhesives and sealants, paints and
coatings, carpet systems, and composite wood and agrifiber
products, the team went for low-emitting materials.
Innovative wind towers were put in place to dramatically improve
air quality. The project team designed the wind towers based on a
combination of meteorology, solar analyses and CFD simulations.
The towers enhance the comfort levels and eradicate stagnant
air in the campus courtyards. They can drop the outdoor air
temperature by up to 12 °C, and save 37 metric tons per year in
Saudi Arabia's desert climate.
Innovation and design process
Going for the Gold required a great deal of commitment by
everyone involved in this project, including the designers and
the builders. Amazingly, all the features and practices in PNU's
colleges resulted in very reasonable or, in some cases, no
additional costs at all. The measures in PNU's Gold certification
journey were achieved through the combined sustainable design
expertise at every level, but the results are certainly worthwhile:
a greener, more sustainable campus in a challenging desert
environment, and ultimately happier students and educators.
