Current Initiatives
Dar Group, London
Dar and its wider group of
companies have already been
trialling collaborative working
arrangements to tackle the
issues of climate change
resilience and adaptation. Dar
London is currently working
alongside Dar Group companies;
Perkins+Will, Integral/Elementa,
Maffeis and Currie & Brown
to build an exemplary new
commercial building in London.
The design is currently on track
to achieve LEED Platinum and
BREEAM Excellent ratings.

Uncertainty about future climate, not to mention population growth, economic
development, response strategies, and other social and demographic issues, can make
resilience planning difficult. Through iterative processes, however, stakeholders can
regularly evaluate the appropriateness of planned and implemented activities and revise
them as new information becomes available. Clearly this is a huge undertaking at the
scale of a large country like the United States, and inherently very difficult to account
for, however the report also concludes that "although there is uncertainty about future
conditions, research indicates that intelligent adaptive actions can still be taken now."
The London Sustainability Group
Our work in the London Sustainability
Group, and the wider Resources &
Environment department at Dar Al-
Handasah presents the opportunity for
promoting resilience on many different
projects. We have historically approached
the subject in many different ways, but
rarely under the title of Resilience Planning.
Environmental Impact Assessments
include many aspects of resilience,
including sections on alternatives. These
alternatives could often be the cheapest
and simplest ways to respond to hazards,
even if they involve moving to a new site
altogether.
Our sustainability team is engaged in
analysing and developing sustainability
policies at all scales. We aim to integrate
sustainable development principles into
strategic visions, masterplans and urban
interventions at all stages; as well as into
the fabric and detail of individual buildings.
The Dar Group's global reach and our
local understanding of the sustainability
priorities of different cities allow us to
design sustainable development solutions
tailored for each project.
