Balanced Cantilever Construction
Precasting
The Dar team opted to precast the box
girders. Precasting is an economical option
in long-span bridges because the girders
are mass-produced in yards (as opposed
to cast in-situ). Advantages include rapid
construction and minimal on-site work.
Disadvantages are the costs of setting up
the casting yard and the need for special
erection equipment.
The segments were manufactured in a
purpose-built casting yard in a specially
designed formwork, using the short bed
method (Figure 3). Each segment was cast
against the formwork and then moved to
the storage area (Figure 4). By using the
short bed method, a perfect fit between
erected segments was ensured. Also, by
carefully controlling the relative position
of the segments during casting, complex
horizontal and vertical alignments were
achieved.
