Collaborative work greatly benefits the construction
industry, helping to mitigate problems before they
arise, keeping costs on budget, and creating working
relationships and value with clients and contractors that
are based on mutual trust and cooperation.
Currie & Brown UK has recently been recognized
for its collaborative working practices in the UK by
being certified for BS 11000 Collaborative Business
Relationships.
BS 11000 is a British Standard that provides a strategic
framework to establish and improve collaborative
relationships in organizations of all sizes, with a focus
on creating value. It covers both internal and external
relationships from internal departments and business
units through to working with peer organizations, clients
and suppliers.

action
To illustrate its collaborative approach to working
with clients and suppliers, Currie & Brown selected its
long-standing relationship with National Health Service
(NHS) Lanarkshire an organisation that provides health
services to North and South Lanarkshire as an example
for BS 11000 certification.
Currie & Brown has been involved in a rolling program
of works for NHS Lanarkshire since 2008 and is currently
involved in a £20-million contract to refurbish seven
operating theaters and a new build intensive care unit at
Monklands Hospital in Lanarkshire. The Currie & Brown
commission also includes a wide range of refurbishment
and backlog maintenance projects around the region.

How collaborative work paid off for Currie & Brown
NHS Lanarkshire was an obvious choice as a partner to
show BS 11000 in action as Currie & Brown has had a
long-term relationship with them.
Working towards certification: Not just another
task, but a way of creating value
Preparing for BS 11000 certification was a major
undertaking. The work called for leadership and support
at the highest level. Currie & Brown, however, did not
see the exercise as an added task but as a means of
creating value for all the collaborative partners, so it has
committed resource and support at all levels.
During the BS 11000 certification audit, Currie &
Brown was pleased to learn that several collaborative
processes were already in place.
The audit looked at how we were managing
performance, monitoring behaviors and dealing with
any issues that arose, as well as how we were looking
to create value many of the things we already had
in place.
