Passivhaus is one of the most demanding
performance standards for green buildings.
Passivhaus buildings provide a high level of
occupant comfort while using very little energy
for heating and cooling. Passive or free heat
sources like the sun, occupants, appliances,
and the heat from the extract air, cover a large
part of the heating demand. The remaining
heat can be provided by the supply air if the
maximum heating load is less than 10 W/m
2
.
Passivhaus Certification demands exceptional
levels of thermal insulation and air tightness, and
requires the use of mechanical ventilation with
heat recovery (MVHR). Annual heating demands
cannot exceed 15
kWh/m
2
, and no more than
120 kWh/m
2
of primary energy can be consumed
each year.
