Green roof
· A green roof will be installed below the
photovoltaic panels to promote biodiversity.
Solar shading
· A combination of horizontal external shading on
the south façade, and vertical shading on the east
and west façades have been optimized to reduce
overheating in summer, whilst ensuring that passive
solar gains are harnessed in winter and daylighting
criteria are met year round.
Ventilation
· Winter ventilation is achieved using mechanical
ventilation with heat recovery via a high-efficiency
thermal wheel. This reduces annual heat input.
Heat is also reclaimed from the kitchen exhaust
via a run-around coil. This approach minimizes
maintenance issues due to grease build-up.
· Summer ventilation is achieved via mixed-
mode ventilation on mild summer days. Natural
ventilation is provided via louvered openings
to supplement the mechanical ventilation (on
summer bypass). These louvered openings will also
be used for secure night purge ventilation.
· Summer ventilation on particularly hot days will
be achieved via the mechanical ventilation with
free cooling provided via the GSHP system.
· At all times of year the return air is transferred back
to the air handling unit (AHU) using the corridors
and main hall as a return air path, or transferred to
the WC areas and then ducted back to the AHU. It
is anticipated that the occupancy will be in either
the classrooms or the school hall, and not in both
simultaneously. The return air path is protected
against noise transfer via cross talk attenuators
and against smoke transfer via motorized fire and
smoke dampers.
Hackbridge is currently in the construction
documentation stage and plans to open in
September 2017 for the new school year.
