laboratories and study areas. Jack Keillor, divisional director at Currie & Brown, said: “People were blown away by the 3D walkthrough, and the school children were very excited about what the sixth form center had to offer.” Keillor explained Currie & Brown’s promotional activity: “We’ve held a number of open days, organized leaflet drops and had articles in the local press. We also had fun at the annual Mayor’s Newham Show where, together with our contractor BAM, we challenged children to make Meccano cranes and color in wall drawings of the renovated buildings to encourage community interest.“ Throughout the whole project, the council was keen that local stakeholders should feel ownership and pride in the Civic Campus development. Praising the encouragement Currie & Brown received, Keillor stated: “We’ve come across a lot of people who remember working in the buildings we were renovating or even studying at the original Technical College. There was a lot of support for what we were doing - to bring new life to the old buildings and a degree of pride in the town.” Keillor further highlighted the economic benefits of the project. “In addition to the fantastic new community facilities, there are other benefits to the local economy. BAM and its subcontractors employed around 10% of its workforce from the local population, and three young people who were taken on as apprentices now have full-time jobs in the industry. It shows that projects like this can have more than just a functional benefit for local communities,” he concluded.
