Overview

The Transfer Beni Haroun is one of the most important water supply schemes in Algeria, supplying the six eastern wilayas of Batna, Khenchela, Milla, Oum El Bouagui, Constantine, and Jijel with water from both the Beni Haroun and Boussiaba Dams.  The project was also designed to support and irrigate 2 million hectares by making around 1.2 billion m3 of water available for irrigation. The project also comprises the Oued Athmania dam and reservoir, located 30 kilometres northwest of the Constantine Province in East Algeria.

The project

For this project, Dar provided technical assistance, design review, and supervision of construction services for the water conveyance systems linking the pumping station at Beni Haroun Dam to the Oued Athmania storage dam. Conveyed water (total rate of 504 million m³/year) caters for potable water needs of the six wilayas (300 million m³/year) as well as for the irrigation of 30,000 ha of Telerghma, Chemoura, and Batna-Ain Touta new agricultural zones (204 million m³/year).

Geotechnical works comprised reconnaissance site visits, design review of landslide zones, tunnel design, slope stability analysis and stabilisation of landslide zones (anchors, nails, drainage, buttresses), and follow-up on tunnel boring progress (TBM) and concrete lining. The project also included a topographical survey.

The system itself consists of a 12 km water pressure main pipeline (diameter of 2,200 mm to 2,600 mm), one 18,000 m³ reinforced concrete balancing reservoir at the outlet of the pressurised conduit, a 6-km-long TBM tunnel with an internal diameter of 3.6 m and an external diameter of 4.2 m, a 900-m-long tunnel with an external diameter of 4 m, 1.3 km of twin steel pipelines (2,600 mm diameter each) linking the balancing reservoir to the tunnel, one 23-m-long semi-circular discharge basin at the outlet of the tunnel, 8 pressurised steel surge vessel tanks 150 m³ each, and relevant electromechanical equipment (6.6 kV switchgear, 400 V diesel generator, 380 V distribution board, SCADA, HV cables, overhead cranes, lighting, lightning protection, UPS, fibre optic cable, etc.).
