Dar’s staff recently joined millions of Ethiopians in the country’s 7th national tree-planting campaign, an inspiring demonstration of environmental stewardship under the Green Legacy Initiative.
Launched in 2019 by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, this program has become one of the largest reforestation efforts globally, mobilising over 20 million citizens to restore degraded landscapes, protect biodiversity, and build climate resilience.
This year’s campaign set an ambitious one-day target of 700 million seedlings, part of a broader 2025 plan to plant 7.5 billion trees nationwide. By mid-year, Ethiopia had already prepared 8.4 billion seedlings and identified nearly 1.9 million hectares of suitable planting land.
Since its inception, the Green Legacy Initiative has surpassed early targets, planting over 40 billion seedlings toward the ultimate goal of 50 billion by 2026. The initiative has also created more than 767,000 jobs, particularly empowering women and youth, and has established over 120,000 nurseries across the country.
Beyond its environmental impact, the Green Legacy Initiative has drawn global recognition for its scale and collaborative spirit. By improving soil health, conserving water, enhancing biodiversity, and increasing carbon sequestration, it addresses both local and global challenges.
Dar’s participation reflects our ongoing commitment to building a greener, more resilient future for the region, working alongside communities to create meaningful environmental change.
